Who are we at HeartHub.ca? We are just like you!
We are patients and family members, we are caregivers and medical experts. But most importantly, we are a group of people with a common goal: to provide patients and their families with the right information at the right time to help them make heart treatment choices.
The idea for HeartHub.ca first came from a research project. While the project was initially designed for diabetic patients with coronary artery disease, much of the information may be used to help guide heart treatment decisions in many different types of patients living with this form of heart disease…
When I developed my heart condition a few years ago, my symptoms did not present in a typical pattern of heart disease patients (mainly men) and therefore I was initially misdiagnosed. Some of the cardiologists suggested that the cause was anxiety or psychologically related. I listened to my body and knew this was a physiological condition. With the help of my GP, I continued to be referred and had the good fortune of finally working with a very knowledgeable and skilled female cardiologist in terms of women's heart health issues. I am forever grateful for her knowledgeable and skilled medical care. My heart condition is now well managed with proper medication, diet and regular exercise. I strongly recommend the heart healthy exercise program to heart compromised patients. I am now living a very active and healthy life.
During a spin class, I suddenly lost all capacity to turn another pedal’s revolution. The following day at the hospital, I was diagnosed with cardiovascular disease… My options seemed to be 1) have a stent, or 2) do nothing… A day later, I had a cardiac event… I was flown by air-ambulance to Vancouver [for treatment]... Within 30 seconds of the cardiologist successfully installing my stent, he told the nurse, “I don’t agree with stenting… except in cases like this”. I’d sure like to know why. Patients today have the benefit of HeartHub.ca where sections like Pros & Cons, Mythbusters, and Checklists will prepare them better than I was. I’m spinning again, climbing mountain trails, wandering the world, and loving life. Looking back, stenting probably was best for me.
